About this course

The role of the board director, especially the Non-Executive Director (NED), has come under closer scrutiny, and in the financial services and banking sectors in particular the expectations of key stakeholders of companies, both internal and external, has increased significantly.

 

Executive directors need to provide leadership and direction and drive the culture of the organisation, as well as ensuring corporate reputation is protected and enhanced. NEDs meanwhile are considered the guardians of corporate governance, and are also required to bring a broad range of experience and business insight to make sure the strategy is on the right track. Board directors now need to demonstrate they are working hard to promote the success of the business, whilst meeting the demands of challenging market conditions, new business models that are disrupting the status quo, as well as complying with regulatory requirements in their jurisdictions.

 

Aspiring directors and NEDs need basic knowledge and understanding of the role, new NEDs need to have the essential tools and techniques to hit the ground running, whilst experienced directors and NEDs need to keep up to date, both technically and with the further development of some of the softer personal skills and director attributes.

 

This comprehensive and practical course is designed to provide Board members with the knowledge and skills required for them to carry out their roles effectively. The session combines a balance of technical learning with the personal soft skills needed.

  • Board Committees – key roles, responsibilities and activities

  • Director attributes – softer skills self-assessment
  • Board performance – how to determine required performance
  • Business strategy – what boards need to focus on
  • Risk in the boardroom – an overview and best practice
  • Other board-related matters and trends – some final thoughts
  • Case studies and group exercises (where appropriate)
  • A deep dive into King IV Code of Corporate Governance

Training Venue

As we progress through 2022 and the years to come, we will continue to take account of the ever-changing environment, with our workshop programme reflecting the circumstances we are in at the time.  This means our programme may be delivered either virtually or in our offices. When the training is in person, we will of course ensure that all of our activity takes place in a Covid-19 secure environment, one that is fully compliant with the relevant government rules and guidance.

 

Facilitator.

This programme is delivered by current and former Board Members from both the private and public sector space sharing real world scenarios and cases for experiential learning. Academics themselves, the facilitators are more often than holders of PhDs in Business Management and Leadership.
